Just how compassionate a city and its people are isn’t determined by doing those things that are easy and require little effort or risk of failure. It is measured by how it responds to those who are in the most need – even if those in need have, in many respects, made bad choices that put them in their awful situation.

Whatever that audit would find – good, bad or ugly – would finally allow the NPCA to move on and restore some measure of public confidence.
Instead, the NPCA is insisting on a more time consuming and costly process.
Sometimes the simplest intervention is all that is needed. Sometimes, a sharp punch to the nose – preferably a metaphorical punch rather than a blow of bone and meat – is all that is required to change someone’s mind.
Hate someone long enough, brandish that ugliness with enough force, and you won’t destroy the thing you fear the most. You’ll create it.
