Just how compassionate a city and its people are isn’t determined by doing those things that are easy and require little effort or risk of failure. It is measured by how it responds to those who are in the most need – even if those in need have, in many respects, made bad choices that put them in their awful situation.
There they sit in their own limbo. Three teenagers – one pregnant – on the street, subsisting on the kindness of strangers.
I won’t deny where actual progress has been made in Niagara. What I am asking for, what the citizens of this region ought to be demanding from Caslin and the rest of the council he leads, is an honest appraisal of the region.

It’s not fake news when journalists scrutinize the behaviour of elected representatives and how they spend the public’s money.
Whatever that audit would find – good, bad or ugly – would finally allow the NPCA to move on and restore some measure of public confidence.
Instead, the NPCA is insisting on a more time consuming and costly process.
Sometimes the simplest intervention is all that is needed. Sometimes, a sharp punch to the nose – preferably a metaphorical punch rather than a blow of bone and meat – is all that is required to change someone’s mind.
Hate someone long enough, brandish that ugliness with enough force, and you won’t destroy the thing you fear the most. You’ll create it.
